Welcome to the Leicestershire RGT.
Please browse our site to learn more about the work that we do to help find loving homes for our retired Greyhounds.
You can see further photographs and details on our dogs looking for homes and events that have been planned by visiting our own forum here
You can help let other people know about our dogs by printing out our downloadable poster. Displaying this on your notice board at work or in the window of your local Post Office could mean a new family for one of our lovely girls or boys!
There are lots of breeds in rescue kennels needing homes, so why choose a Greyhound?
First of all, why NOT to:
- Don't waste your time thinking about a Greyhound as a guard dog - forget it. They seldom bark or growl, rarely bite and would most probably welcome an intruder with the same friendly greeting they accord to anyone, friend or stranger. They're such kind, helpful souls that they'd probably even help the burglars to load their van with your stolen valuables!
- Unless your children can be trusted to treat a Greyhound with respect, not poke his eyes or pull his tail and ears, you ought not to be considering introducing a dog of any breed into your home. Perhaps a harsh thing to say, but the welfare and happiness of our dogs is paramount, the thing that matters to us most of all.
So getting back to "Why" a Greyhound?
Many, many reasons. Those who own, know and love them often refer to them as "40mph couch potatoes" which sums them up pretty well. After a 20 minute walk on their lead twice a day, they will
happily loaf around for the rest of the time, be that at home or by your side at the office. Just looking at a Greyhound chilling out in their incomparable fashion is enough to induce relaxation!

Troy, a typical laid-back Leicestershire RGT boy
- As a breed they are gentle, placid and friendly. They love people and generally get on well with other dogs.
- In general, they suffer from no congenital health issues such as hip dysplasia or entropion which can be a problem in other breeds.
- Low maintenance - they have a short, smooth coat which needs little grooming. When they moult, the volume of fur is minimal. As the hair they shed is short and soft, it is easy to vacuum up even from carpets.
- Despite their size, they somehow take up far less room than smaller breeds which are more active. An older person would be much safer with a Greyhound who lounges in his basket for most of the day than, say, a lively Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or a West Highland Terrier who might get under their feet and trip them up.
- Greyhounds are great travellers and really enjoy a ride in the car - they just want to go wherever you're going!

"Are we nearly there yet?"
Whilst their laid back reputation is thoroughly deserved, they are great fun and fantastically adaptable companions too. Very willing to please, they like to join you in whatever hobby or activity that might be.

Why should I choose a Greyhound from The Leicestershire RGT?
We are not interested in statistics that make us look good, nor in "shifting" dogs quickly into homes. We know our dogs well, love them very much and want them to find their home and remain there - happily and forever.
They are beautifully cared for in their kennels on the outskirts of Melton Mowbray and quite content to wait there until the right owners find them. They have lots of company, both human and canine, plenty of treats and fuss. They play freely in the paddocks twice a day for an hour or so (depending on the weather) and also get daily walks across the fields in the surrounding countryside on their leads.
Knowing our dogs so well enables us to offer an unparalled service in terms of matching the owners and their circumstances with the right hound.
The support we offer to owners after adopting a dog is unique and our commitment to the dogs that we rehome is life long. Our aftercare and post adoption service is without equal.
Choose a lovely boy or girl from The Leicestershire branch of the RGT and we promise that it will be the best decision you've ever made!
